Should product pages or collection pages be prioritized for Shopify SEO?

Collection pages first, always. Collection pages target broader purchase-intent keywords with higher search volume and drive significantly more organic revenue per page than product pages. Product page SEO becomes the priority after collection pages are fully optimized and ranking — or for specific hero SKUs that have meaningful standalone search demand (where a specific product name or model is searched independently with transactional intent).

What is the right keyword strategy for a Shopify product page?

Target keywords specific to one individual product — not category keywords that belong on a collection page. The keyword should match the exact product variant, material, or use case that distinguishes this product from others. If the keyword could apply to multiple products in the catalog, it belongs on a collection page. If it's specific to one SKU, it belongs on this product page.

How long should Shopify product descriptions be for SEO?

150–400 words. Short enough to stay scannable on mobile and not overwhelm the product images and add-to-cart button — long enough to include the target keyword two to four times naturally, cover key features, benefits, and use cases, and provide enough content for Google to understand the product's relevance to the target keyword. Never use the manufacturer's description verbatim — duplicate content from other sites hurts rankings.

Does having more product reviews improve Shopify SEO?

Reviews improve Shopify SEO in two ways: (1) review schema — when properly configured, star ratings appear in Google SERPs improving click-through rate 10–30%, which is a user engagement signal Google weighs in ranking; (2) review content — customer reviews add fresh, unique, keyword-rich content to the product page without the brand needing to write it. A product with 200 reviews has 200 pieces of user-generated content covering product keywords, use cases, and long-tail phrases that the brand may not have thought to include in the description.

How should internal links to product pages be built?

Three sources in order of value: collection pages (every collection page should list the product and link to it — the collection page internal link is the primary equity source for most product pages); blog posts (best-of and comparison posts that feature the product should link to it with the product name or a keyword variant as anchor text); and related product sections on other product pages (the 'you might also like' section is an internal link opportunity — configure it to link to related products using keyword-relevant anchor text rather than just the product name).

Shopify Product Page SEO: How to Rank Individual Products and Convert the Traffic

Product Pages vs. Collection Pages: What Goes Where

The most common product page SEO mistake: optimizing product pages for category keywords that belong on collection pages. A product page selling one specific yoga mat should not be optimized for "yoga mats" — that's a collection page keyword covering a range of products. The product page should be optimized for the specific keyword that describes this exact mat: "cork yoga mat," "extra thick yoga mat for bad knees," or "6mm non-slip yoga mat" — keywords that match a specific product variant and have transactional intent in the SERP.

The test: search the keyword in Google and read the top results. If they're individual product pages, it belongs on a product page. If they're category pages showing multiple products, it belongs on a collection page. Assigning a category keyword to a product page creates cannibalization between the product page and the collection page — and the collection page will almost always win that internal competition, making the product page optimization wasted effort.

Meta Title and Product Title Structure

The Shopify product title becomes both the page H1 and the default meta title displayed in search results. Two considerations: the title needs to be human-readable for the product page user, and it needs to front-load the target keyword for search engine visibility. The structure that balances both: Target Keyword — Product Name — Brand Name, within 55–60 characters to avoid SERP truncation.

When the product title structure doesn't allow the keyword to appear first — because the product has a distinctive model name that needs to lead — use Shopify's separate meta title field (under Search Engine Listing Preview in the product editor) to write a keyword-forward meta title that differs from the product title. The meta title is what appears in SERPs; the product title is what appears as the H1 on the page. They can be different, and for keyword optimization purposes, they often should be.

Product Description Optimization

The product description serves two audiences simultaneously: the buyer who is evaluating the product and Google, which is evaluating the page's relevance to the target keyword. A description optimized only for conversion (short, punchy, benefit-focused with minimal keyword repetition) and a description optimized only for search (long, keyword-stuffed, mechanically structured) both underperform. The 150–400 word range produces a description long enough to establish keyword relevance without overwhelming the add-to-cart button with text the buyer has to scroll past.

The structure: first sentence includes the target keyword and establishes the primary product value proposition. Middle section covers key features and benefits in the context of the buyer's use case. Near the end, include technical specifications relevant to the purchase decision. Final sentence uses the keyword or a close variant in a closing statement. This structure serves the buyer's decision process and places the keyword where Google's crawler sees it most — the beginning and the end of the content block.

The manufacturer's description is the single most common product page SEO error. Brands that copy product descriptions directly from supplier catalogs or manufacturer sites have duplicate content from those sources — Google identifies the duplicate and typically ranks the original source (the supplier or manufacturer site) over the store that copied it. Write original descriptions for every product. If time is the constraint, the ChatGPT workflow described in the $50K to $87K case study — human writes three examples, AI scales to the full catalog — is the practical solution.

Image Alt Text

Shopify's default behavior: when a product image is uploaded without custom alt text, Shopify applies the product title as the alt text for all images. This means every image on a product page may have identical alt text — which is both a missed keyword opportunity (all images using the same text rather than variant-specific descriptions) and a poor accessibility experience.

The correct approach: override every product image with specific alt text that describes what's actually visible in the image using the target keyword and relevant descriptors. Primary product image: "Target Keyword — Product Name against [white background / lifestyle context]." Secondary images showing specific features: "Product Name [feature detail] — close-up." Lifestyle images: "Product Name in use — [use case description]." This variation across images provides multiple keyword placement opportunities while accurately describing each image for accessibility tools and screen readers.

Schema and Reviews

Most Shopify themes include product schema (name, description, price, image) by default. The gap: aggregate review data. When a review app (Okendo, Yotpo, Judge.me, or similar) is installed and properly configured with the product schema, the average star rating and review count appear in Google SERPs alongside the product page title and meta description. This rich result — star ratings visible before a click — improves click-through rate by 10–30% compared to the same result without stars.

Verify the full schema setup using Google's Rich Results Test. Enter any product URL and check whether the Product type is detected, whether offers data (price, availability) is included, and whether AggregateRating data is present. Any element listed as an error or warning should be corrected — it represents either a missed rich result opportunity or an implementation error that could affect how Google evaluates the page's structured data.

Customer reviews are also an SEO asset in their own right. Each review adds unique, keyword-rich text content to the product page — content written by buyers, in their own language, covering how they use the product and what they were searching for when they found it. A product with 200 reviews has a page that is significantly more content-rich and topically varied than the same product with zero reviews. Building an active review acquisition strategy — automated post-purchase email requests, loyalty program incentives — produces compounding SEO benefits beyond the social proof value the reviews provide to future buyers.
