How I Sold $150,000 Worth of Hot Tubs Using SEO
Do you want to increase your online sales? I used SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to sell over $150,000 worth of hot tubs for a luxury brand. This is how I did it.
How to Improve eCommerce SEO
Working with a company that sells high-end outdoor products, including hot tubs and saunas, we witnessed a remarkable transformation. In January 2024, the company was receiving less than 40 visitors per month from search engines. Today, they are welcoming over 1,000 visitors per month. This substantial increase is a testament to the power of SEO!
We also got 93 keywords related to their products on the first page of Google. One of those keywords was "luxury hot tubs." Due to our SEO efforts, the site was discovered, and people purchased hot tubs worth $45,000 to $55,000 each.
Here's the SEO plan we used:
Fix technical SEO issues.
Improve collection pages on the website.
Build strong links to the website.
Let's look at each of these steps.
Technical SEO Basics
Technical SEO is about ensuring your website is easily understood by search engines. For most online stores, technical SEO is not the most important thing. But you still need to get the basics right.
Here's what we did:
Fix Broken Links
Broken links occur when a page on your website is missing or has been moved. Search engines don't like broken links. They make your site look bad.
We used a tool called Screaming Frog to find broken links. Then, we redirected those links to the right pages. It's important to redirect to a relevant page. Don't just send everyone to the homepage.
Robots.txt and Site Structure
The robots.txt file instructs search engines on which pages to index. Online stores often have too many pages that are not visible to search engines. These include product tags and blog tags.
Shopify, a popular e-commerce platform, can create duplicate URLs for products. We ensured that only one URL appeared in search results.
Image Compression
Page speed is how fast your website loads. Some SEO experts place a strong emphasis on page speed. But it's not as crucial for high-end products. People buying expensive hot tubs aren't going to leave because the site takes a half-second longer to load.
However, very slow page speeds can be a problem. The website had many large images that significantly slowed it down. We used an app to compress the images and optimize the site's performance.
We resolved all these technical issues within approximately 48 hours. Now, we check the site every week to ensure everything is working correctly.
On-Page SEO for More Sales
On-page SEO involves optimizing your website's content to enhance both its visibility in search engines and its usability for users.
Here's how we improved the site:
Collection Page Optimization
The company sold hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, and fire pits. Initially, they had a separate collection page for each type of product. But we realized we could do more.
We created 11 collection pages for hot tubs. These included:
Luxury hot tubs
Custom hot tubs
Commercial hot tubs
Above-ground hot tubs
In-ground hot tubs
Two-person hot tubs
Three-person hot tubs
Four-person hot tubs
Up to 12-person hot tubs
By having more collection pages, we could target more keywords. For example, "luxury hot tubs" gets 1,300 searches per month. But all 11 collection pages combined get over 11,000 searches per month.
We used the same process for each collection page. This helped us rank on the first page of Google for many keywords.
By targeting more keywords, we increased the chances of making a sale.
Blog Content
The company also sells saunas, fire pits, and cold plunges. We created blog content to build authority in these areas. Instead of writing a few blogs for each category every month, we focused on hot tubs first. Once the hot tub content was functioning, we proceeded to the other categories.
Around this time, the company was undergoing a brand change. They wanted to target homeowners with a net worth of $25 million or more. We began writing about luxury home ideas and designs. We even wrote about how billionaires are building doomsday bunkers!
We managed the brand change and moved the website to a new domain. The change went smoothly. Traffic dropped for a week or two, but then went back up.
Off-Page SEO: Building Links
Off-page SEO involves getting other websites to link to your own. These links tell search engines that your website is trustworthy.
Backlinks are crucial for achieving a high ranking in search engine results.
Here's what we did to build links:
Guest posting and link insertions
Reddit and other link-building
Press mentions
Exact match keyword domains
Initially, we purchased exact-match domains. These are domains that use the exact keywords we were targeting. We redirected these domains to the main website. This helped us rank higher.
We also tried Reddit and other link-building tactics. But we didn't see much value in them.
We found that press mentions and link insertions were most effective. We obtained links from reputable sites, such as The Daily Mail and MSN. We also got links from websites related to homes and gardens.
We found pages with traffic on related sites. Then, we offered to pay to insert a link to our client's website. High-quality link insertions can enhance your search engine rankings.
The Results
Thanks to our SEO strategy, the company has seen a significant increase in non-branded visitors, going from zero to over 1,000 per month. They now dominate the top of page one for all their hot tub keywords. This success is a testament to the power of a well-executed SEO plan.
Building on the success we've seen with hot tubs, we're now planning to replicate this strategy for saunas, fire pits, and cold plunges. We're also looking to expand into commercial deals with hotels and resorts. This shows the potential for continuous growth and expansion with the right SEO strategy.
The success of our plan can be attributed to its adaptability. It was not a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather a customized strategy that evolved in response to the company's changing needs. We regularly reviewed and adjusted our tactics to ensure we were always on the right track.
Conclusion
SEO can help you sell more products online. By resolving technical issues, enhancing on-page content, and establishing strong links, you can optimize your website to rank higher in search results. This will bring more visitors to your site and increase your sales.
